Abbey Medicare's Carbon Neutral Plan
1. Calculate Current Emissions
Scope 1 Emissions (Direct Emissions): Focus on the fuel used by the 3 vans for transport and service calls.
Scope 2 Emissions (Indirect Emissions from Energy): Energy consumption in the office and storage units, including heating, lighting, and electricity use.
Scope 3 Emissions (Other Indirect Emissions): Emissions from waste disposal, employee commuting, and supply chain activities related to the procurement of medical devices and parts.
Begin with an emissions audit, which can be done using online calculators or via a sustainability consultant to get an accurate baseline. This will help in setting reduction targets and measuring progress over time.
2. Reduce Emissions from Transportation
Fleet Optimization:
Route Planning: We use google mapping to optimize routes to minimize mileage and fuel consumption. With 70% of repairs completed on the first visit, maximizing first-visit completions should reduce unnecessary trips.
Van Maintenance: Regular maintenance of vans (e.g., tire pressure, engine checks) to ensure fuel efficiency.
Transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs):
We consider transitioning to electric or hybrid vans. Government grants for EVs, along with cost savings on fuel, may offset initial costs.
New vehicle policy to include the purchase of EV,s and plug in Hybrids.
Employee Commuting:
We encourage carpooling, cycling to work scheme (available), flexible work-from-home options (where applicable) to cut down on commuting emissions.
3. Energy Efficiency in Office and Storage Units
Lighting: Install LED lighting, which is more energy-efficient and has a longer lifespan than traditional lighting.
Heating and Cooling:
Installed a smart thermostat and adjust temperature settings to reduce unnecessary heating or cooling. Consider electric heat pumps as a low-emission heating solution.
Use energy-efficient insulation in the office and storage units to reduce heating and cooling requirements.
Switch to Renewable Energy:
As many UK providers now offer renewable energy options at competitive rates, we will endeavour to Opt for a green electricity tariff from renewable sources
4. Waste Reduction and Recycling
Recycling Programs: within our business park we recycle cardboard paper and plastic waste. We also comply with WEEE regulations for the disposal of metal electronics and batteries. All staff are trained to manage their waste as in accordance with our Quality Management system ISO9001.
Paperless Operations:
We have digitized records, invoicing, and communications to reduce paper use. Use of computer software and electronic communications to transact internally and externally.
Device and Component Recycling:
Work with suppliers to ensure that medical devices and components are recyclable or have take-back programs. Partner with local recycling services to responsibly recycle any waste or returned devices.
5. Engage with Sustainable Suppliers
We evaluate suppliers as part of our approved vendors procedures based on their environmental credentials, focusing on those who actively work towards carbon neutrality. Opt for suppliers who use recyclable or biodegradable packaging and offer low-carbon delivery options.
Work with local suppliers wherever possible to reduce emissions related to transportation and shipping.
6. Employee Training and Engagement
All staff are trained on sustainable practices, such as efficient energy use, optimal van driving techniques for fuel efficiency, and recycling practices.
We foster a culture of environmental responsibility, encouraging staff to contribute ideas for further carbon reduction and to implement eco-friendly practices at work.
7. Offset Remaining Emissions
Calculate Unavoidable Emissions: After reductions, we calculate any remaining emissions that cannot be eliminated.
Our aim is to drive emission down year on year.
8. Regular Review and Reporting
As part of our annual management review, we assess emission levels, reduction progress, and new opportunities for improvement.
We share updates with employees, stakeholders, and clients, enhancing transparency and commitment to sustainability.
